Yet Another Article on Social Media

SARCASTIC TONE REQUIRED

Social Media this, Social Media that — I AM SICK AND TIRED OF ALL THE SOCIAL MEDIA HOOPLAH!  Yet here I am writing another article about it.  

I’m so confused.  I grew up with computers, my first one was a Mac All in One.  It didn’t even have a hard drive (1987).  I have since graduated to owning dozens of them over the past 24 years.  The evolution is insane. 

What’s even more impressive however, is how the importance of having an internet presence has exploded over the past several years. I have to admit, my web presence is less than adequate.  I know all the things to do, but here’s what remains on my "checklist":SEO

  1. Keyword selection
  2. Meta-Tag enhancement
  3. Anchoring
  4. Facebook Enhancement (Fan Page?)
  5. Twitter Enhancement
  6. QR Coding (where’s the value?)
  7. LinkedIn – Get to know my business associates
  8. Blogging – consistently

Where do I start?  Or better yet, where do I stop?  The constant evolution of the internet combined with the highly expected instantaneous communication demands from our clients make selling real estate a secondary job.  Take for example Keyword selection — according to several SEO experts you must optimize your web presence with a set of pre-defined keywords that you choose and continually incorporate them into all aspects of your social media.  While this may sound easy, according to my research, in order to end up high in the search engine rankings you must have THOUSANDS of keywords that you incorporate into your website and social media outlets.  Realtor.com, for instance, has over 1,000,000 backlinks to their site.  Another local company has over 850,000.  It would take me from here to eternity to write 850,000 backlinks let alone the media required in order to put together those type of pages is astounding.

So, I ask again, where do I stop?  How much search engine optimization do I need to do in order to EFFECTIVELY be placed on the first page of Google? NOTE:  I’m only speaking about web presence.  How about the other mediums such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Plaxo and etc.  It is so completely overwhelming.

Here’s my course of action — I am going to pick out one keyword phrase and optimize my web presence around it.  I am going to coordinate these efforts in every tweet and am going to try and use some back linking from LinkedIn and Blogging.  Who knows, maybe I’ll get lucky and end up on page 64 of Google…
