Preparing Vacant Listings for a Hurricane

Hurricane Irene is projected to make landfall in the next few days in North Caroline and then ALL ALONG the east coast and possibly even into Maine!

Did you know that according to Al Roker (the Today show) the storm could effect 65 million people?  That’s a lot of homes!Hurricane Irene

Within the geography of projected landfall there are, no doubt, a number of homes which are vacant and unprepapared for the potential devistation which may be forthcoming.  To protect your client/customer listings, there may be a few things you’d like to consider to prepare for the storm:

1.  If the home has hurricane shutters, install or close them asap.
2.  Some trees may pose a significant threat to certain areas.  If you are planning on trimming the trees before a storm (usually not recommended), make sure that the debris is in a windsafe place such as inside of a secure garage.
3.  Make sure that all windows and sliders are closed, locked and secure.  If the garage has locks, you may want to lock it down.
4.  Make sure that all doors are locked and secure.
5.  Lawn furniture should not be left outside.  110+ MPH winds can pick up lots of your outdoor items.
6.  You may want to drain pools a few inches or more.
7.  Outdoor basketball hoops, hammocks, landscaping enhancements and etc. could pose an airborne threat during high wind situations.  If possible, you should remove these items and put them in a safe place.
8.  Place flashlights and batteries in an easy to get place in the home(s).
9.  Most importantly — don’t panic while trying to do all these things.  There will be a lot of people feeling a lot of stress — your responsible and controlled behavior will be helpful to all those around you.  It’s a great time to be considered a leader in your community.

Obviously, before making any changes to a listing you will want to obtain the consent of the homeowner prior to making such modifications.

Good luck to all of you in the path of this hurricane.  I hope it decides to head East and miss impacting the United States all together.
