Why I Fired the Lawn Guy

I was using the same lawn service for the past several years.  Each week they’d show up, cut the grass and trim the bushes (if necessary).  What I did not realize that they were doing was maintaining the weeds too.  This would have been great if they limited the weed control to the weeded area(s).  In an instant and before I knew it, there were several areas of the lawn which they killed because of the careless weed killing methods (overspray)!

Shame on me for not being attentive enough and oversee their work!

Now, I am in the midst of repairing the damge they’ve done to the lawn.  I project that the damage will be “cured” in 4-6 months as the area(s) they’ve killed need time to rejuvinate.
Dead Grass
Why is this important to a Realtor?  In keeping our listings up to snuff, it’s important for us to have attractive curb appeal — after all, it’s the first thing a potential Buyer notices when arriving at a property.

For those of you who sell REOs and are responsible for the upkeep of the yard, it’s important to maintain the curb appeal too.  I suggest visiting the property not only immediatley after the work is done on the property but also a few days later.  Look for signs of dying grass or disturbed vegitation.  If there is evidence of dying grass (as the result of overspray) you may wish to speak with your lawn care professional and ask them how they intend to fix the problem they’ve created.

In this highly competitive real estate environment, it’s important to “do everything right”.  By allowing a yard maintenance crew to destroy the curb appeal of your listing, you’re lowering your chances of selling the property or at least lowering the chance of selling at premium pricing.
