Why You, and I, Should Volunteer

At 8:45 AM today I had a TREMENDOUS “aha moment”.

I was sitting in a presentation at the Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce, listening to the Executive Director of Boca Helping Hands (BHH) speak about the organization he’s the leader of. He started out by explaining his background as a former Greek Pastor who, several years ago, decided that he wanted to become involved with a local charity. After reviewing a few options he landed with a local charitable organization called Boca Helping Hands.

For those of you unaware (me included until this morning), every year BHH serves food to more than 10,000 families in South Florida. They serve over 20,000 hot meals and deliver to over 6,500 people who are “home bound”. On top of that, they provide over 40,000 sandwiches to children in low-income after school programs and provide financial assistance to over 500 individuals and families in crisis situations. In 2009, BHH actually provided over 339,000 pounds of food to the homeless. The most startling statistic is that they served almost 6,000 CHILDREN in 2009 and even more last year! My wife, who previously attended a presentation of BHH, told me that sometimes the sandwich to the child is the only food consumed by the child per 24 hour period. WOW! Can you imagine only consuming 1 sandwich in a 24 hour period?

BHH not only assists with helping individuals with their nutritional needs, but they also help with job placement and mentoring programs. It was explained to me today that they actually have a state of the art computer lab which clients use to seek employment opportunities. In the event a client lands an interview, BHH provides them with clothing so they can be presentable at the interview. If they land a job, like over 150 people did in 2010, then BHH donates 5 days worth of clothing to the client so they can be prepared and presentable for their new job.

On top of all this BHH has a comprehensive Children’s Assistance Program where they offer Summer School Scholarships, School Supplies, Health Insurance, Tutoring Assistance, Sports Fee Requirements and Camp Assistance.

I honestly can’t think of a better volunteer organization to become a part of. They provide many of the services needed in our community and do it with only 5 paid employees. The people “working” the operation are volunteers and number 300+. These volunteers give — UNCONDTIONALLY — toward the community. Volunteers range from age 8 to 93. Do you fall into this category? Visit their website to learn more: http://www.bocahelpinghands.org. If you’re outside of the South Florida geographic area, perhaps visiting their web site will spark certain ideas within you that you can apply on the local level in your area.

It’s time for me to give back to the community! Our family of 5 will be volunteering our time. How ’bout you?

As a very good friend of mine recently stated: “Volunteer work can do wonders for one’s soul.” Whether it’s your sole or the sole of another, helping out, one person at a time, will make a difference. That’s why you should volunteer!

Cheers to Boca Helping Hands! I’m glad you’re a part of our community.
